Ridge walks, cedar shade and the unhurried heart of Himachal’s first hill station
Shimla sits on a long, forested ridge above the Shivaliks, still carrying the layout of the old summer seat — a pedestrian Mall, a church square on the Ridge, and cedar-lined slopes that drop toward Cart Road. Most Himachal family circuits begin here because the town is easy to reach from Chandigarh and because two nights are enough to feel the place without treating it as a one-evening stop.
A good Shimla stay mixes an early Mall walk before the shops fill, a quiet hour at Christ Church, and a half-day toward Kufri or Naldehra. The UNESCO toy train from Kalka is worth building into arrival if your dates allow the slower approach.
The ridge greens quickly. Pleasant walking weather and the first colour in the gardens.
Full hill-station mood — café evenings, toy-train arrivals and a packed Mall after dusk.
Sharp views after the rains, gold in the orchards and the quietest comfortable weeks.
Ice on the Ridge some mornings, snow outings to Kufri and a slower, jacket-weather town.
