The month depends on the region
Tawang in snow is not the same holiday as Ziro in planting season, or Mechuka after the rains.
In general, October to April is the most reliable window for Tawang, Dirang, Shergaon and the other western highland stops. Ziro and Mechuka can still work outside that band if you accept greener, wetter roads.
Use this guide to match the season to the circuit — not to hunt for one perfect month for the whole state.
Seasons at a glance
| Season | Months | Travel experience |
|---|---|---|
| Winter | November to February | Snow, cold weather, high Himalayan landscapes |
| Spring | March to April | Pleasant days and clearer mountain views |
| Summer | May to June | Green valleys, still comfortable at altitude |
| Monsoon | July to September | Lush country, possible road holds |
| Autumn | October to November | Clear weather and the best overall mountain light |
Winter — snow on the western highlands
This is the season most people picture for Tawang. Sela, Dirang, Shergaon, Sangti and Bum La sit in cold air; the higher ground can turn white. It suits snow, winter photographs and a quieter town — if you accept that Sela or Bum La can close for a day after a fall.
Best winter destinations
- Tawang
- Dirang, Shergaon, Sangti Valley
- Sela Pass and Bum La Pass
Best for
- Couples who want snow
- Families comfortable with real cold
- Winter photography
Spring — the balanced window
The hardest winter eases. Valleys start to green. Roads are usually kinder than January. This is a strong period for a first Arunachal week that is not built only around snow — Tawang still works, and so do Ziro and Mechuka.
Why spring works
- Pleasant daytime temperatures
- Comfortable sightseeing
- Good light for photographs
- Suitable for longer road trips
Summer — green valleys, still cool at height
The Indian plains are hot; Tawang, Dirang, Ziro and Mechuka stay comparatively comfortable. Valleys look their greenest. Weather can start to turn as monsoon approaches, so keep a buffer on the last driving day.
Summer suits family holidays, nature-led trips and unhurried valley time.
Monsoon — lush, and the least predictable
Forests and rivers look spectacular. It is also the season of landslides, holds and days that do not run as written. Higher ground can sit in cloud.
Worth it only if you are flexible. A first Tawang road trip is usually better outside peak monsoon.
Autumn — often the best all-round balance
Monsoon green is still on the hills. Rain eases. Ridges sharpen. October and November suit Tawang, Dirang, Shergaon, Sangti, Ziro and Mechuka — and they are the months many travellers should book first if they have no snow requirement.

Plan the season with the circuit
Picking a month is only half the work. Use the Arunachal Pradesh Tour Plan guide to choose Tawang, Ziro, Mechuka or Dibang — not all of them in one short week. Budget factors sit in the Tour Cost guide.
Choose the season. Then choose one region and give it enough days.
