How should I plan the trip?
Once you have decided to visit Kashmir, the next question is usually how to plan the journey.
The answer depends on three things: how many days you have, which destinations matter most, and how fast or relaxed you want the week to feel.
A common mistake is trying to visit every famous place in the shortest possible time. A better trip is not necessarily the one with the longest list of destinations. It is the one that gives you enough time to enjoy the places you have chosen.
Start with the number of days you have
Available time should decide the shape of the itinerary.
If you have 4 to 5 days
Focus on the most important destinations. Trying to cover every location can make the trip feel rushed. A short trip may focus on Srinagar, Gulmarg and Pahalgam. Depending on pace, one destination may need to be an excursion rather than an overnight stay.
Best for
- Short holidays
- First-time visitors with limited leave
- Travellers looking for a quick Kashmir experience
If you have 6 days
Six days allow a more balanced journey. You can begin considering Srinagar, Gulmarg, Pahalgam and Sonmarg. The key is deciding which places are day visits and where an overnight stay will improve the experience.
Best for
- First-time Kashmir travellers
- Families and couples
- Travellers who want the classic Kashmir circuit
If you have 7 days
Seven days give greater flexibility. Instead of simply adding more destinations, use the extra time to stay longer in Pahalgam, enjoy Srinagar at a slower pace, consider an overnight stay outside Srinagar, and avoid excessive hotel changes. This is often a better choice for a relaxed holiday.
If you have 8 days or more
An extended trip lets you go beyond the most common circuit. You may add Doodhpathri, extra time in Pahalgam or Gulmarg, leisure days, or other places based on the season. The goal should not be to fill every day with driving. The additional time should improve the quality of the experience.
The four main decisions when planning Kashmir
A good tour can be designed through four simple decisions.
Decision one: arrival and departure base
For most travellers, Srinagar works as the starting and ending point. That makes it an important part of the overall route. The first and last day should generally stay flexible, because flight schedules and arrival times can affect sightseeing.
Decision two: priority destinations
Srinagar
- Dal Lake, houseboats, Shikara
- Mughal Gardens and local markets
Gulmarg
- Mountain scenery and the gondola
- Snow and winter activities in suitable conditions
Pahalgam
- Valley landscapes and rivers
- A slower mountain stay
Sonmarg
- Mountain landscapes and a scenic journey
- Often best as a separate excursion
Doodhpathri
- A good add-on when you have more time
- Beyond the standard first-time circuit
Decision three: day excursions or overnight stays
Not every destination needs to be an overnight stop. On a shorter trip, keeping Srinagar as the primary base reduces hotel changes. On a longer trip, a night in Pahalgam or Gulmarg can create a more immersive experience.
Ask yourself: do I want to see the destination, or spend time experiencing it? A day trip may be enough for sightseeing. An overnight stay is better if you want a slower experience.
Decision four: travel pace
Fast-paced
- Suitable when time is limited
- More destinations, but travel days can feel busy
Balanced
- Sightseeing mixed with rest
- Suits most first-time visitors
Relaxed
- Fewer destinations or longer stays
- Families, couples, honeymoon travellers
- Anyone who enjoys slow travel
The itinerary should match your preferred pace rather than simply copying a standard route.
Example Kashmir route combinations
These are route ideas rather than complete package itineraries. The final route should always be adjusted to travel dates and conditions.
| Route | Shape | Suits |
|---|---|---|
| Short | Srinagar → Gulmarg → Srinagar → Pahalgam → Srinagar | Limited time |
| Classic | Srinagar → Gulmarg → Srinagar → Sonmarg → Srinagar → Pahalgam → Srinagar | First-time circuit with extra days |
| Relaxed | Srinagar → Gulmarg → Srinagar → Pahalgam → Pahalgam → Srinagar | Fewer transfers, more time in each place |
| Extended | Srinagar → Gulmarg → Srinagar → Sonmarg → Srinagar → Pahalgam → Doodhpathri → Srinagar | Travellers with more time |
How to plan Kashmir for different travellers
Families
- Avoid excessive hotel changes
- Prioritise comfortable travel days and rest
Couples
- Overnight stays in scenic places rather than travelling every day
Honeymoon travellers
- Leave leisure time instead of filling every hour with sightseeing
Groups
- More flexible routes — transport costs are shared
- Logistics are often easier to organise together
Senior travellers
- A relaxed route with fewer long transfers
- Enough rest between drives
Three common Kashmir planning mistakes
Trying to cover everything
- Destinations should be selected according to available time
Changing hotels too frequently
- Checking out every morning can make the holiday tiring
Treating every destination the same
- Some places work as excursions
- Others deserve more time
