The month decides whether you get roads or water
Meghalaya does not offer one “perfect week.” The monsoon fills the cliffs. Winter clears the roads and the Umngot.
For most travellers the working window is October to April. If Nohkalikai and Seven Sisters at full voice are the point, consider June to September — and leave slack in the itinerary.
When is the best time?
| Season | Months | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Spring | March – April | Sightseeing, green hills, easier roads |
| Pre-monsoon | May | Falls starting to rise; weather turning |
| Monsoon | June – September | Maximum water, mist, green — slower drives |
| Autumn | October – November | Green after rain, better road trips |
| Winter | December – February | Cool, drier, thinner falls, clearer Dawki |
Best overall / couples / families / road trips: October–April. Best for waterfalls: June–September. Best balance of water and travel: October.
October to April
October–November is the balanced week: green after the rain, roads more honest, photography still good. December–February is cool and dry — the classic first-timer window, with slimmer falls and a better chance of clear Umngot. March–April stays comfortable for the Shillong–Sohra–Dawki–Mawlynnong loop. May is a hinge month: more water on the cliffs, more humidity, less certainty.
June to September
This is when Sohra and Mawsynram earn their reputation. Nohkalikai, Seven Sisters, Wei Sawdong and Dainthlen run hard. Cloud sits in the folds. The same rain that makes the photograph can close a stair or double a drive.
Come for water and green. Do not come for a tight timetable or a guaranteed glass-green Dawki boat. Families with small children or anyone who needs Nongriat stairs should prefer the drier months.
Best window by place
| Place | Strongest months |
|---|---|
| Shillong / Umiam / Mawlynnong | October–April |
| Sohra cliffs & caves | Oct–April for walking · Jun–Sep for volume |
| Nohkalikai / Seven Sisters | June–September for flow |
| Dawki / Shnongpdeng / Umngot | October–April for clear water |
| Krang Suri / Jaintia / Mawsynram | October–April |
| Nongriat double-decker | October–April — treat it as a walk, not a halt |
