Spiti in its winter form

In winter, Spiti becomes a remote Himalayan world of snow, frozen slopes, quiet villages and gompas that look nothing like their summer selves. Unlike a summer road trip, this is an expedition. It asks for patience, flexibility and an eye for weather.

The 7-night circuit runs Chandigarh–Shimla–Kalpa–Tabo–Kaza and returns the same way through Kinnaur. High villages around Kaza stay on the plan only when ice and snow allow. Overnight on the way back is held in Narkanda or Shimla, depending on how the long day actually runs.

Day 01

Chandigarh to Shimla

Overnight · Shimla  ·  ~115 km · 4–5 hours

  • Meet our representative at Chandigarh Airport / Railway Station and drive towards Shimla.
  • The road leaves the plains and climbs into the Himalayan foothills.
  • Check in. Evening at leisure — Mall Road and The Ridge if arrival time and weather allow.
Day 02

Shimla to Kalpa

Overnight · Kalpa  ·  ~220 km · 8–10 hours

  • After an early breakfast, check out and drive toward Kalpa.
  • The road deepens into Kinnaur — mountain corridors and valleys that grow more dramatic by the hour.
  • Check in. Kalpa is known for quiet surroundings and views of the Kinner Kailash range.
  • Evening at rest to acclimatise as the altitude rises.
Day 03

Kalpa to Tabo via Nako

Overnight · Tabo  ·  ~165 km · 6–8 hours

  • After breakfast, continue toward Spiti Valley.
  • Kinnaur green gives way to the dry, rugged Trans-Himalayan terrain.
  • Stop at Nako, a remote village in spectacular mountain country.
  • On arrival in Tabo, check in. Visit Tabo Monastery if time and local conditions permit.
Day 04

Tabo to Kaza via Dhankar

Overnight · Kaza  ·  ~50 km · 3–4 hours with stops

  • After breakfast, check out and drive toward Kaza.
  • Stop at Dhankar Monastery, set high above the valley.
  • Continue to Kaza, the main town of Spiti.
  • Check into the hotel or homestay. The rest of the day is for rest and acclimatisation.
Day 05

Kaza Local Sightseeing | Winter Spiti

Overnight · Kaza

  • Key Monastery — snow around the gompa changes the whole mood of the place.
  • Kibber, one of Spiti’s well-known high villages.
  • Chicham Bridge and the gorge below.
  • Further stops only if winter roads allow. The day’s plan stays flexible.
  • Return to Kaza for overnight stay.
Day 06

Kaza to Tabo

Overnight · Tabo

  • After breakfast, check out and begin the return toward Tabo.
  • Winter travel in Spiti should not be rushed. A night back in Tabo keeps the next drive honest.
  • Check in. Evening free in the quieter valley surroundings.
Day 07

Tabo to Narkanda / Shimla

Overnight · Narkanda / Shimla

  • After an early breakfast, begin the long return through Nako and Kinnaur.
  • The high desert falls behind as the road drops toward the Shimla hills.
  • Overnight in Narkanda or Shimla, depending on road conditions and how the day actually runs.
  • Narkanda is often the cleaner winter break before the last run to Chandigarh.
Day 08

Narkanda / Shimla to Chandigarh | Departure

Transfer · Chandigarh Airport / Railway Station

  • After breakfast, check out and drive toward Chandigarh.
  • The road leaves the foothills and returns to the plains.
  • Drop at Chandigarh Airport / Railway Station, or your preferred point in the city.
