Ladakh does not look the same all year
The landscape changes with the season. The right month depends on what you want from the week.
For most travellers, May to September is the practical window. Leh, Nubra and Pangong are generally reachable, and road days are workable. Outside that band you can still go — for snow, quieter streets or photographs — if you accept what the season will not give you.
Which month is best?
| Month | What Ladakh is like | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| April | Cold, early-season air | Snow, quiet trips |
| May | Season starts to open | Budget, leftover snow |
| June | Pleasant days, circuits open | General sightseeing |
| July | Warmest popular weeks | Families, road trips |
| August | Strong light, full access | First-time visitors |
| September | Clearer, thinner crowds | Couples, photographs |
| October | Cold and quieter | Off-season travel |
| Nov–Feb | Deep winter | Snow, winter trips |
| March | A transition month | Experienced travellers |
May to September — the working holiday window
This is when a conventional Leh–Nubra–Pangong week is designed to run. Monasteries around Leh, Khardung La and the lakes can sit in one itinerary. Road tours have the most flexibility.
May
The season begins. Higher ground can still hold snow. Leh starts to fill. Good if you want fewer people, softer prices than July, snow on the walls and quieter town evenings. Check the pass the morning you leave.
June
One of the best all-round months. Weather suits sightseeing. The classic loop and longer weeks toward Tso Moriri or a Srinagar / Manali approach all become more realistic.
July and August
Peak demand — school holidays, full rooms, busy shores and markets. Book hotels and cabs early.
September
The rush eases. The land is still spectacular. Strong for couples, photographs, bikes and anyone who wants the circuit without July’s crowd.
Is October workable?
Leh can still be visited. Nights drop fast. Some seasonal stays wind down. If the week must include remote lakes and long side valleys, summer is simpler. If you like cold and empty roads, October is a different Ladakh.
November to February
Winter is another destination. Temperatures fall well below freezing. Many standard circuits stop being casual. It suits snow photographs, a quiet Leh, frozen-river country and winter expeditions — including Chadar when conditions and rules allow. It needs more preparation than a summer package.

There is no automatic “worst” month. There is only a season that does not match what you booked the week for.
Give the body two nights in Leh
Leh is already high. Pangong and Tso Moriri sit higher. Do not judge a plan by how many names it lists on day one. A comfortable itinerary is worth more than a rushed one.
Best overall: June to September. Fewer people and better value: May and September. Snow: December to February, if you are ready for the cold.
