Do not just join dots on a map
High altitude, long drives and roads that close mean the sequence matters.
A good week lets the body settle in Leh before Nubra or Pangong. For most first visits, Leh, Nubra and Pangong is the right introduction. Extra days add Sham, Turtuk, Tso Moriri or a Srinagar / Manali approach — not all of them in six nights.
How many days are enough?

A practical 6 night / 7 day shape
Nubra is the green trough after the pass — Diskit, Hunder dunes, double-hump camels. Pangong sits around 4,350 m. Do not put either on the afternoon you land.
When you have more nights
7 nights / 8 days
Move Sham before Nubra and keep an extra Nubra or Leh night so every day is not a transfer. Our Scenic Escape uses the extra night for Turtuk.
8–9 nights
Room for Tso Moriri or Hanle — not both unless the week is already at ten nights. Offbeat turns east after Pangong.
10+ nights
The Grand circuit holds both lakes, Hanle and a buffer night in Leh. That last Leh day is for weather slip, not shopping only.
Entering by road
Srinagar → Sonamarg → Drass → Kargil → Lamayuru → Leh climbs gradually and makes Kargil a real night. Manali → Leh is a different high-altitude road, only when the season allows. Both are approaches, not replacements for two rest nights in Leh before Nubra.
What belongs on the plan
Always, on a first week
- Leh — palace, stupa, market, the acclimatisation base
- Nubra — Diskit and Hunder after Khardung La
- Pangong — one night if dawn matters
When the days exist
- Sham Valley — Pathar Sahib, confluence, Alchi
- Lamayuru — gompa and the eroded moonscape
- Tso Moriri — quieter lake on a longer week
Three rules
Acclimatise first. The airport is not a launch pad for Chang La.
Do not stack six long drives. Six names in six days look complete and feel like a commute.
Leave slack. Weather and roads move the clock. A spare Leh night saves the flight.
