Anini

The far headquarters of Dibang — forest roads and a thin calendar of visitors

A destination for people who like the drive

Anini is the headquarters of Dibang Valley, reached by a long forest corridor rather than a short hill hop. The town itself is small. What you come for is the country around it — river gorges, high pasture and a sense of eastern Arunachal that the Tawang road never shows.

This is not a first Arunachal trip. Give it a week, a buffer day and a vehicle that can handle broken stretches. Monsoon is the wrong season. Winter is cold and clearer. Permits and road status should be checked before you leave the plains.

Anini

Famous for

  • The remote headquarters of Dibang Valley
  • Forest-and-river approaches rather than a single pass
  • High pasture and Idu Mishmi highland country
  • A visitor calendar that stays thin even in good months
  • A very different east from the Tawang monastery circuit

Best time to visit

  • October to April: the only window most travellers should use
  • November to February: colder, often clearer hills
  • March to April: milder days if the road has been kind
  • June to September: do not build Anini into a fixed holiday
