Gold roofs, prayer flags and the high heart of western Arunachal
Tawang sits close to 3,000 metres, a compact hill town that most western Arunachal journeys are built around. The monastery dominates the ridge; below it, lanes drop toward the market and the road that continues toward Bum La. Reaching here is part of the trip — the climb through Bomdila and Dirang, then the high saddle of Sela — so two or three nights is the honest first stay, not a single exhausted evening.
An Inner Line Permit is required. Days work best when they are unhurried: a morning at the monastery, a lake or waterfall outing, and one buffer afternoon for weather. Bum La is a separate, permit-led excursion, not a default add-on for every itinerary.
Valley colour below the snow line and a more comfortable climb to the town.
Longer days at the monastery, but monsoon cloud can sit on the passes.
Sharp ridges, deep blue skies and the window many first-time visitors prefer.
A white, very cold Tawang. Beautiful if you accept ice and possible road holds.
Tell us nights, whether you want Bum La, and which month you are travelling. We handle the ILP and the pacing of the climb.
