Sela Pass & Sela Lake

The high saddle that decides how Tawang feels that day

A crossing, not a destination to linger

Sela is the high point on the Dirang–Tawang road. Prayer flags, a small lake that ices over for much of the year, and a wind that does not match the valley you left an hour earlier. The Sela Tunnel now gives an all-weather line under the crest, but the old pass and the lake remain the reason most travellers still climb the last stretch when the road is open.

Plan a short stop, not a long walk. Altitude arrives quickly after Dirang. Carry a layer even in May. Winter ice can close the crest for a day or two; always treat the day’s plan as weather-led.

Sela Pass & Sela Lake

Famous for

  • One of the high motorable saddles on the Tawang approach
  • Sela Lake — often frozen, sitting just off the crest
  • Prayer flags and the West Kameng / Tawang gate
  • Jaswant Garh on the Tawang side of the climb
  • The contrast between the snow line and the rhododendron lower down in spring

Best time to visit

  • April: snow still on the peaks, flowers in the valley below
  • October: the clearest skies and a dry road surface
  • March and November: possible ice; start early
  • July to September: fog and landslide risk on the Dirang approach
