Kargil

The green western halt — Suru Valley, Drass and the road that links Kashmir to Leh

More than a night on the highway

Kargil sits on the Suru, lower and greener than Leh, on the Srinagar–Leh highway. Most first itineraries treat it as a sleep stop. That works if you are only passing through. It wastes the town if you have a spare day: the river fields, Mulbekh’s cliff Buddha on the Leh road, and the Drass memorial an hour west are the reasons to stay a second night.

This is a different Ladakh from the high lakes. Apricot and barley sit against Nun and Kun. The memorial at Drass is a quiet, formal visit — not a viewpoint circuit. Arrive from Srinagar, sleep, then either turn south into Suru or continue east toward Leh the next morning.

Famous for

  • The main overnight on the Srinagar–Leh highway
  • Suru Valley — green fields under Nun and Kun
  • The war memorial at Drass, a short drive west
  • Mulbekh’s cliff-cut Maitreya on the road toward Leh
  • A lower, orchard town that does not look like the Changthang

Best time to visit

  • May to September: the highway is open and Suru is green
  • July: the memorial week at Drass; book rooms early
  • April–May: apricot blossom in the side valleys if the road is clear
  • November to March: hard winter; not a casual halt

Kargil through the seasons

Late spring

The highway usually opens. Blossom in the orchards if you time April–May.

Peak summer

Suru at its greenest. The standard window for a Srinagar–Leh drive.

Early autumn

Gold in the poplars, colder nights, a quieter town than July.

Winter

Deep cold. The highway is not a tourist drive. Leave Kargil off a first winter plan.
