Nubra Valley

A river trough of sand, poplars and a giant Buddha after the high pass

Two nights, not a day trip

Nubra sits beyond Khardung La, lower than Leh once you drop off the crest, in a wide sandy trough where the Shyok and Nubra rivers meet. Hunder’s dunes and the double-hump camels are what most photographs show. Diskit’s giant Buddha and the old gompa above the village are what hold the day together.

Do this after two nights in Leh. One night in Nubra is tight; two nights let you walk the dunes at last light and not treat the pass as both arrival and departure. Inner Line Permit applies.

Nubra Valley

Famous for

  • Hunder sand dunes against bare granite walls
  • Bactrian camels on a former Silk Route corridor
  • Diskit Gompa and the giant Maitreya above the village
  • A lower, greener night than Leh after the pass crossing
  • The usual first valley once you leave town

Best time to visit

  • June to September: the pass is reliably open and camps are running
  • June and September: fewer bikes on the crest, still full valley access
  • May: possible once Khardung La clears — confirm the morning you leave
  • October onward: cold nights; the pass can close after a fall

Nubra Valley through the seasons

Early summer

Dunes without the peak crowd if the pass has opened.

High summer

Long light, busy Hunder evenings, every camp open.

September

Clearer walls and a quieter Diskit morning.

Winter

Usually a no — the pass and the valley road are not a casual winter trip.
