Khardung La

The high saddle most first itineraries cross — treat it as a gate, not a picnic

A crossing after you have slept in Leh

Khardung La is the motorable crest between Leh and Nubra. Prayer flags, a short stop, thin air and a road that is usually open from late spring through early autumn. The numbered height on the board is part of the folklore of the pass; what matters on the day is ice, wind and whether you have already spent two nights in Leh.

Do not linger. Take the photograph, keep moving toward Diskit or Hunder, and do not plan this as a same-day return from the airport. The pass is the door to Nubra, not a separate holiday.

Khardung La

Famous for

  • The high motorable crest on the classic Leh–Nubra road
  • Prayer flags and a brief, windy halt at the top
  • The first real altitude test after town
  • Views back toward the Indus and forward into Nubra
  • A crossing that still closes after heavy snow

Best time to visit

  • June to September: the reliable window for a first crossing
  • Late May: often open — confirm the morning you leave Leh
  • October: possible, colder, ice can return without much notice
  • Winter: not a standard tourist crossing
