Tso Moriri

A quieter, higher lake on the Changthang — all of it inside India

The lake after you have already done Pangong — or instead of it

Tso Moriri sits on the Changthang around Korzok, a long high-altitude sheet that does not share Pangong’s film-shore crowd. The drive from Leh is six to seven hours. The lake is a wetland reserve. Birds use the banks in the open months. The small gompa above Korzok is the village’s other reason to stop.

Overnight is the point. A same-day dash wastes the drive. Combine with Hanle only when the week is long. Permits apply. Winter closes the standard approach.

Tso Moriri

Famous for

  • A high lake lying entirely on the Indian Changthang
  • Korzok village and its gompa on the western bank
  • Migratory birds in the open months, including the black-necked crane in season
  • A quieter shore than Pangong’s well-known bank
  • The long drive itself — barren plateau, not a shortcut

Best time to visit

  • June to September: the usable window for the standard road
  • June and September: birds and fewer vehicles than peak summer
  • July to August: fullest colour, camps open, busier than spring
  • Winter: the lake ices; the usual tourist road does not run
