The hill station on a ridge — tea gardens below, Kangchenjunga on a clear morning
Darjeeling sits at about 2,045 metres on a ridge facing Kangchenjunga. Most visitors arrive from Bagdogra Airport or New Jalpaiguri after a three-to-four-hour climb. The town centres on Chowrasta and Mall Road — a walking square of cafés, shops and views. Below the ridge, tea bushes cover the slopes that gave the district its name.
Tiger Hill is the usual sunrise point. Batasia Loop, the Himalayan Railway (a UNESCO World Heritage line), Peace Pagoda, Observatory Hill and nearby tea estates fill a local day. The Toy Train runs on a limited schedule. October to December and March to May are the clearest windows.
Sharp light on Kangchenjunga after the rains.
Cold nights and frequent clear mornings.
Pleasant walking weather around Mall Road.
Cloud over the range; the town stays open.
