West Bengal’s high point — a Singalila ridge with four of the world’s tallest peaks in view
Sandakphu stands at about 3,636 metres on the Singalila ridge, on the border of India and Nepal. It is the highest point in West Bengal. From the top, on a clear day, the line of Everest, Lhotse, Makalu and Kangchenjunga can be seen together — a view often called the “Sleeping Buddha” when the Kanchenjunga massif is read as a reclining figure.
Most people reach it on a three-to-five-day trek from Manebhanjan through Tumling, Kalipokhri and similar ridge hamlets, or by a rough land-rover track when the road is open. April–May brings rhododendron; October–November brings the clearest air. Winter snow and the monsoon close or complicate the ridge.
Flowering slopes and a popular trek window.
The sharpest view of the high peaks.
Snow, cold huts, uncertain tracks.
Cloud and a closed or risky ridge.
