Chaukori

Tea terraces facing the high wall — a small Kumaon halt between Almora and Pithoragarh

A sunrise town, not a sightseeing list

Chaukori is a small ridge settlement known for tea slopes and a Himalayan sunrise — Nanda Devi and her line when the morning is clear. There is no Mall. Walks stay on the gardens and the nearby pine. Many Kumaon weeks use it as a night between Binsar and Munsiyari.

October and November are the reliable view months. Spring is green. Monsoon hides the wall. One night can be enough if the dawn is clear; two nights if the view is the reason you came.

Chaukori

Famous for

  • Tea terraces looking at a Himalayan wall
  • Quiet Kumaon nights without a lake market
  • A practical halt on the Pithoragarh road
  • Sunrise that depends on one clear morning
  • A slower alternative to Nainital’s crowd

Best time to visit

  • March to June: green gardens, a chance of a clear dawn
  • October to November: the sharpest sunrises
  • Winter: cold and empty; views after a clear night
  • Monsoon: the tea stays; the wall usually does not
