Nainital

The lake in a fold of seven hills — a Kumaon base, not only a boat hour

Two nights if Bhimtal or a ridge walk is on the card

Nainital sits around Naini Lake, a working hill town rather than a single viewpoint. The Mall, the boat jetty and the ropeway are the first afternoon. Snow View and Naina Peak need a clearer morning. Bhimtal and Sat Tal are easy half-days if you stay two nights.

May weekends from the plains fill the lake road. October and November are kinder. Kathgodam is the usual railhead.

Nainital through the seasons

Spring / early summer

The classic family window — book May weekends early.

Monsoon

The lake stays; the views often do not.

Autumn

The light on the water most photographs want.

Winter

A closed-in town. Snow is a bonus, not a plan.
