Haridwar

The ghat town where the Ganga meets the plains — aarti first, temples second

An evening on the steps, not a rushed temple list

Haridwar is the plain-side gate to Garhwal. Har Ki Pauri holds the evening aarti that most first visits are built around. Mansa Devi sits above the town. The rest of a day is ghats, a slow market and, if the week continues, the short road to Rishikesh.

Festival weeks and Kumbh dates change the city completely — book early or pick another month. Pair with Rishikesh rather than treating both as the same afternoon.

Haridwar

Famous for

  • Har Ki Pauri and the evening Ganga aarti
  • The first major ghat as the river reaches the plains
  • Mansa Devi on the hill above town
  • A spiritual start or end to a Garhwal week
  • Festival energy that needs its own booking window

Best time to visit

  • October to March: cooler evenings on the steps
  • February to April: comfortable days before the plains heat
  • May–June: hot; still workable if the aarti is the only aim
  • Festival / Kumbh dates: extraordinary, and a different logistics problem

Winter

The kindest evenings for the aarti.

Spring

Busy but manageable outside festival weeks.

Summer

Heat on the ghats; keep the day short.
