Chopta

A high meadow under the Kedar range — Tungnath first, Chandrashila if the legs allow

The short trek that still needs a proper night

Chopta is a meadow shelf at around 2,680 m, used as the walk-up base for Tungnath — the high Shiva shrine on the Panch Kedar line — and, if you continue, Chandrashila. The point is the meadow and the ridge, not a checklist of temples done in one exhausted afternoon from Rishikesh.

The road typically opens from April after winter. October is often the clearest. Rhododendron weeks in spring are why many people come early. Stay in Chopta or Ukhimath; do not treat it as a same-day dash from the plains.

Chopta

Famous for

  • Open meadows under the Kedar peaks
  • Tungnath, the high shrine above the pasture
  • Chandrashila for a wider ridge view if you continue
  • Rhododendron weeks in spring
  • A quieter Garhwal night than Mussoorie or Nainital

Best time to visit

  • April to June: flowers, temple open after winter, dry trail
  • September to November: post-monsoon clarity — often the best light
  • December to March: snow trek country; stays thin out
  • Monsoon: the trail and the road both suffer
