Munsiyari

The last major Kumaon town under the five Panchachuli peaks

A long road for a close wall of snow

Munsiyari sits at the head of the Johar valley, facing the Panchachuli group. It is a full day’s drive from the Nainital side. The town is small. The reason to come is the wall of peaks, Birthi Falls on the way, and walks toward Khalia Top when the trail is clear.

April to June and October are the usual windows. Winter snow can close the last stretches. This is not a one-night add-on after Nainital — give it two nights after the road.

Munsiyari

Famous for

  • Panchachuli peaks standing over the valley
  • A road-end Kumaon town rather than a Mall station
  • Birthi Falls on the approach
  • Khalia Top and meadow walks in the open months
  • Snow weeks when the last road still runs

Best time to visit

  • April to June: rhododendron, open road, clearer peaks before monsoon haze
  • September to November: post-monsoon light
  • December to March: snow; access is not guaranteed
  • Monsoon: the wall hides and the road suffers
