Rishikesh

Where the Ganga meets the first hills — aarti, jhulas and a river that is not a backdrop

A night for the river, not only a rafting slot

Rishikesh sits where the Ganga leaves the hills. Lakshman Jhula and Ram Jhula stitch the two banks. Ashrams and the evening aarti are why many weeks start or end here. Rafting on the upper stretches is a separate morning, not the whole town.

Pair with Haridwar if the week is spiritual. Pair with Mussoorie or Chopta if it is hills after the river. Avoid the peak monsoon for the water.

Rishikesh

Famous for

  • Lakshman Jhula and Ram Jhula across the Ganga
  • Evening aarti on the ghats
  • Ashrams and a long-running yoga town
  • White-water stretches above town in the open season
  • The usual first or last night on a Garhwal week

Best time to visit

  • February to May: comfortable town days and a working river
  • September to November: post-monsoon water and clearer hills
  • July–August: the river runs high; rafting is usually off
  • Winter: quiet ghats, cold mornings, no ski-town snow
