Cherrapunji / Sohra

The wet plateau south of Shillong — cliffs, caves and the falls the state is known for

One night on the plateau beats a rushed day trip

Sohra — still printed as Cherrapunji on many cards — is the limestone plateau that drops toward Bangladesh. Nohkalikai, Seven Sisters, Mawsmai and Wei Sawdong all sit on or under this shelf. A day trip from Shillong fits the viewpoints. A night in Sohra fits the walks.

Monsoon is why the place is famous and why the road is slow. October to April is clearer. Use the Khasi name Sohra with locals.

Famous for

  • One of the wettest inhabited plateaus on the maps
