Dawki & Umngot River

A glass-green border river — the boat is the day, not the town

Go when the water is clear, not when the feed is green

Dawki sits on the Umngot where Meghalaya meets Bangladesh. The week is sold on boats that look as if they float on air — that only holds when silt is low, usually in the drier months. Monsoon turns the river ordinary and brown.

Boats are extra and local. Mawlynnong pairs naturally on the same eastward day. Do not promise the glass photograph in July.

Dawki & Umngot River

Famous for

  • Umngot’s dry-season clarity
  • Wooden boats on a border river
  • A long day east from Shillong
  • A natural pair with Mawlynnong
  • The Bangladesh bank in sight from the water

Best time to visit

  • November to April: the clear-water window
  • May: still possible before the heavy silt
  • Monsoon: skip if the photograph is the reason
  • Weekdays: fewer boats on the same stretch
