Shillong

The Khasi capital on a pine ridge — a café town and the base every Meghalaya week starts from

Two nights if Sohra is a day trip, not the only halt

Shillong sits on a high Khasi ridge and still works as the first and last night of most Meghalaya weeks. Police Bazaar is the evening. Ward’s Lake and the cathedral are a slow morning. Umiam is on the way in from Guwahati, not a separate expedition.

Use it as a base, not as the whole holiday. Sohra, Dawki and Jaintia falls need their own days. October to May is the comfortable window; monsoon is wet and the town stays open.

Shillong

Famous for

  • Police Bazaar evenings and a working hill capital
  • Ward’s Lake and a compact colonial centre
  • The usual first night after Guwahati airport
  • Cafés and a cooler ridge than the Assam plains
  • A base for Sohra, Dawki and Jaintia day or overnight runs

Best time to visit

  • October to May: the working sightseeing window
  • November to February: clear, cold mornings
  • March to May: milder days before the heavy rain
  • June to September: wet; town stays open, views often do not
