Mawkdok Dympep Valley

A deep green fold on the Sohra highway — a stop for the view, not a village stay

Ten honest minutes on the way to Sohra

Mawkdok Dympep is the roadside valley that opens as you drop toward Sohra. The hanging walkway and the layered ridges are the reason to stop. Cloud fills the fold on many monsoon afternoons. It is not a trek and not a half-day.

Use it outbound from Shillong or inbound the same evening. Do not build a separate excursion around it.

Mawkdok Dympep Valley

Famous for

  • A sudden deep valley on the Sohra road
  • A hanging walkway over the drop
  • Layered Khasi ridges when the cloud lifts
  • The photograph between Shillong and the plateau
  • A halt, not a destination with a hotel

Best time to visit

  • October to April: the fold is more often visible
  • Early day: less haze than late afternoon
  • Monsoon: come for mood, not a distant ridge
  • Weekends: the walkway queues
