Umiam Lake

The reservoir on the way up from Guwahati — a viewpoint halt, not a separate destination

Stop on the climb, then continue to Shillong

Umiam, often called Barapani, is the large reservoir that appears as you climb from Guwahati toward Shillong. Most weeks use it as a viewpoint and boat hour on arrival day — not as a two-night halt.

Water levels drop in the dry months and the shore looks different. Boats are extra. Pair with Shillong the same afternoon.

Umiam Lake

Famous for

  • A wide reservoir in the Khasi foothills
  • The first Meghalaya view on the Guwahati road
  • Boating when the water is up
  • Picnic shoulders and a dam-side walk
  • A photograph stop, not a full circuit

Best time to visit

  • October to May: clearer views from the rim
  • Monsoon: full water, low cloud
  • Peak dry months: the shore sits lower
  • Weekends: busy from Shillong
